It was in pretty bad shape, but the bones were great. What do you guys think? The light mint color is gorgeous next to our dark grey walls, and the oil-rubbed bronze pulls really pop now. After re-finishing the desk, I placed it in the entrance to the master bedroom as a console-type table. Bonus points for being a place where I can work on my laptop and store blog stuff! As you can tell from my pictures, the color of the desk really has a life of its own.
Most of the time the color is similar to the first photo; however, sometimes it looks almost white with a hint of blue. For a touch of pizazz, I painted the sides of the drawers yellow. In real life the color feels a little more pastel. The drawers were in great condition, so I only painted the sides. The chair that goes with this desk may or may not be getting a fun pop of yellow also… ;- This is a photo of the desk from the entrance to our room.
The other door just past the desk is our bathroom door. I am working on finding some great accessories to spruce up the space a little, but for now I am incredibly proud of how the desk turned out!

Before the late 17th century, when pewter, silver and ceramics were used as tableware, the majority of items used were from carved wood. Treen has become highly collectable due to its fine patina and tactile appeal. Antique Treen – a brief history In the latter half of the twentieth century, interest in treen and other wooden bygone objects grew considerably, as with interest in antiques in general.
Treen covers a wide spectrum of objects, however ornaments are never described as treen, as all treen were made for a specific use and in their making a well proportioned attractive form is conveyed through a high level of craftsmanship. A suitable timber for its purpose was always used and nowadays through many years of use a good colour and patination is most desired. In the 17th century in England the turner most probably had no equal, and the wealthy of those days had their vessels made from imported woods such as lignum vitae.
Carved wooden objects on the other hand were less desired by the wealthy in England, and therefore the finest carved objects originated from France, Italy and other Western European states. Such a variety of woods were used that in some cases it is hard to verify the type, and designs were used for generations, so dating is more of an art than a science. Wood was used so prevalently in those days, because it was abundant and less expensive to use than other costly alternatives, hence many objects with sometimes more than one purpose were turned and carved, which makes collecting treen and other wooden bygones such a satisfying and interesting hobby.

Fred Taylor May 26, In an effort to determine the range of the age of a piece of furniture, we have the beginnings of a built-in time line if the piece has drawers. The concept of the modern chest of drawers as we know it, a case containing a series of more or less matching drawers, became a reality in the latter part of the 17th century.
Of course single drawers and combinations of drawers were made earlier but appeared usually as an adjunct to the lift top or dower chest which was the most common chest type in the that century. The most common storage facility of the era was the cupboard or court cupboard consisting of open shelves below doors which concealed more shelves.

True resale value will probably depend on the type of area where your set is located.
The reason being that it would cost almost as much to ship it as the sale price would be so local trade is what you would most likely be looking at.

Portable boxes for writing materials had existed for many centuries and in many cultures. However it was not until the last decades of the 18th century that the socio-economic circumstances in England necessitated the wide use of a portable desk in the form of a box which could be used on a table or on one’s lap. Although quality, ornament and form did play an important part in its selection as a personal item, it is the purpose for which it was used which gave prominence to the writing box, at a time of expanding intellectual curiosity, communication, literacy and increased commercial activity.
The writing box was an item of style and fashion yes, but it was also an item connected with intelligence, commerce and world awareness. From the end of the 18th, to the end of the 19th century, the writing box featured prominently on military expeditions, travels, libraries and in drawing rooms. Great literature as well as dispatches, contracts, letters and postcards were written on its sloping surface. Through it both business and personal activity were transacted. Unlike the writing desk or table it was a personal and not a household possession.
